A different version of the Sunflower Showdown opens on Tuesday night as alumni squads Purple Reign and JHX Hoops square-off.
Veterans of the storied Sunflower Showdown rivalry face-off on Tuesday night at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan, Kansas, as Purple Reign, a Kansas State alumni team, opens its best-of-three first round series in The Basketball Tournament against Kansas alumni group JHX Hoops. The Basketball Tournament returns for its 13th session with 14 teams competing for the $2 million winner-take-all prize. Games use the Elam Ending, with a target set after the first four minutes of the fourth quarter to ensure every game ends on a made basket.

Former Jayhawks Marcus Garrett, Billy Preston, Jamari Traylor, Frank Mason III, Zeke Mayo, Tyshawn Taylor, Kevin Young, Darnell Jackson, Carlton Bragg Jr. and Mario Chalmers feature for JHX Hoops, which reached the third round of TBT in 2025. The team is augmented by Jacob Hanna, Andrew Orr, Tra-Deon Hollins and DJ Burns, as each squad is allowed up to four non-alumni members.
Michael Beasley headlines Purple Reign along with former Wildcats Cartier Diarra, Jacob Pullen, Abayomi Iyiola, DaJuan Gordon, Austin Trice, Shaun Williams, Kamau Stokes and Xavier Sneed. Joining that group are Tyonte Robertson, John Florveus and Brandon Childress. Purple Reign lost in the second round of the 2025 TBT to JHX Hoops.
Game 2 of the series is set for Wednesday night at Lee Arena in Topeka, Kansas, with Game 3 to be played back at Bramlage Coliseum on Friday night if necessary.
