The Washington Nationals (53-52) evened their three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks (55-50) on Saturday, ending Arizona’s four-game winning streak, and the teams play the rubber game of the set on Sunday at Nationals Park in Washington. The Nationals pulled off a trade on Saturday night, sending infielder Curtis Mead to the Boston Red Sox for left-hander Connelly Early. Early, on the injured list with an elbow problem, last pitched on June 30 while Mead, acquired from the Chicago White Sox in late March, slashed .254/.352/.500 with 17 home runs in 87 games.

CJ Abrams keyed a four-run third inning for Washington with a two-run double and Daylen Lile added a two-run triple in its 5-3 win on Saturday. Abrams added a solo homer in the fifth and left-hander Foster Griffin worked into the seventh inning, allowing three runs on six hits, to improve to 12-2 before relievers Eddy Yean and Clayton Beeter retired the final seven batters in order to finish out the victory.
Gabriel Moreno lifted the Diamondbacks to a 2-0 lead in the third with a two-run single before he was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double. Arizona didn’t score again until James McCann knocked in a run with a seventh-inning base hit. Rookie Mitch Bratt took the loss, allowing five runs in five innings while walking five and surrendering seven hits.
Right-hander Miles Mikolas (3-7) starts the series finale for the Nationals, entering with a 5.60 ERA and 1.337 WHIP in 98 innings over 21 appearances, including eight starts. Left-hander Kohl Drake, who made his major-league debut on Tuesday, takes the ball for Arizona after allowing a run on four hits with five strikeouts in five innings in a no-decision against the Athletics.
