The Cleveland Guardians will continue their six-game road trip on Sunday afternoon when the team takes on the Tampa Bay Rays in the finale of their weekend series at Tropicana Field. The Guardians come into Sunday’s game with a record of 54-52 so far this season, which has them sitting in second place in the American League Central standings, trailing the leading White Sox by just 1.5 games. The Rays are currently leading the American League East standings with a record of 61-43, but the Yankees are closing in on them and are only two games back. While much of the season remains, with the second half officially underway, both teams will try to move up in the standings and earn a coveted playoff position.

On Saturday, the Rays secured a series victory against the Guardians, winning 3-0 behind strong pitching from Nick Martinez who improved to 10-2 with the win on the mound. The Rays only allowed five hits in the win while producing nine. While they left a lot of players stranded, the three that the team brought home ended up being enough to hold off the Guardians.
Yandy Díaz and Chandler Simpson each recorded two hits at the plate to lead the Tampa Bay offense. Junior Caminero brought in the first run with an RBI double, his 17th of the year, to plate Díaz in the bottom of the fifth. Cedric Mullins was responsible for the second run with a sac fly to bring home Jonathan Aranda. Hunter Feduccia placed a perfect sac bunt down the first base line in the bottom of the sixth to close out the scoring as Victor Mesa Jr. came home.
The Guardians will put the ball in Parker Messick’s hand on Sunday afternoon while the Rays will rely on Drew Rasmussen. Messick is currently 8-5 with an ERA of 2.68 and Rasmussen is also sitting at 8-5 with an ERA of 3.28. Tune in Sunday afternoon to see if the Rays can complete the sweep at home.
