Detroit opens a three-game series with the Seattle Mariners (55-58) at T-Mobile Park in Seattle on Tuesday night, with the Mariners adding a right-handed bat when they picked up outfielder Taylor Ward from the Baltimore Orioles ahead of the deadline.

The Tigers also traded right-handed starter Casey Mize to the San Diego Padres just before Monday’s deadline, putting their starting rotation in flux after sweeping three games from the Athletics in West Sacramento over the weekend. Detroit acquired prospects Zyhir Hope, River Ryan and Brady Smith from the Los Angeles Dodgers for Skubal and got 2024 first round pick Kash Mayfield from San Diego.
Seattle acquired Ward on Monday after sending right-handed starter Luis Castillo to the Chicago White Sox for reliever Seranthony Dominguez, outfielder Nolan Jones and catcher Boston Smith. The Mariners opened their current nine-game homestand by taking two of three from the Minnesota Twins over the weekend, winning the last two games in walk-off fashion. Seattle trails the Guardians by two games for the final wild card position in the AL and sits 2.5 games back of the AL West-leading Houston Astros.
The Mariners open the series with right-hander Emerson Hancock (6-5) on the hill. He enters play with a 3.26 ERA and 1.042 WHIP in 20 starts and 110.1 innings. Detroit’s Troy Melton will get the start with a 6-1 record and 1.75 ERA.
