The Arizona Diamondbacks (57-52) open a three-game series with the Cleveland Guardians (56-54) on Friday night at Progressive Field in Cleveland, the final stop on a 10-game road trip. Arizona took two of three from the Pittsburgh Pirates, winning the final two games to tie the Philadelphia Phillies for the second National League wild-card spot. The Guardians enter the series two games behind the Chicago White Sox in the American League Central and a game up on the Minnesota Twins and Houston Astros for the AL’s last wild-card position.

Eduardo Rodríguez worked eight shutout innings on Wednesday as Arizona beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0. Gabriel Moreno put the Diamondbacks up 2-0 with a two-run home run in the fourth and Max Kepler added an RBI single in the sixth while Rodríguez teamed with Brandyn Garcia on a five-hitter. The win clinched the series for Arizona, which improved to 4-3 on its current trip.
The Guardians got four unearned runs in the fifth inning on Wednesday night, breaking open a scoreless game en route to a 6-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds to close a 2-4 road trip with a series win. Kyle Manzardo forced home a run with a walk in the fifth and later hit a solo home run in the seventh, with Travis Bazzana adding an RBI single. Joey Cantillo struck out eight in four scoreless innings before six relievers added another eight punchouts over the final five frames.
Tanner Bibee (4-10) draws the assignment for Cleveland in the series opener. The right-hander comes in with a 3.89 ERA and 1.184 ERA in 22 starts and 125 innings. The Diamondbacks go with rookie left-hander Mitch Bratt (0-1), who enters with a 6.32 ERA and 1.979 WHIP in four starts covering 15.2 innings.
