The Canadians, who have won the tournament 25 times since its inception in 1991, rolled past Switzerland in its group-stage opener on Monday while Slovakia, coming off a second-place finish at the U18 World Championships in April, dropped an overtime matchup to Sweden. The player to watch for Canada is defenseman Landon DuPont, an early contender to go No. 1 in next summer’s NHL draft.

Canada blitzed Switzerland 7-3 on Monday, unleashing a five-goal first period before cruising to the win. Brock England and Liam Pue scored two goals apiece while Ryerson Edgar added a goal and an assist and Sam Berthiaume made 22 saves. Oliver Botka tied the game for Slovakia on Monday with 3:29 remaining before Sweden got the game-winner 2:51 into overtime to hand the Slovaks a 4-3 loss. Tomas Selic finished with a goal and an assist and Patrik Rychlik opened the scoring for Slovakia with a shorthanded tally in the first period.
Four groups of four teams play a round-robin, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the semifinals. Canada finished third at the 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup while Slovakia placed sixth in the tournament, which was won by the United States.
