The Tigers come into Tuesday’s game with a record of 47-53 so far this season, which has them sitting in fourth place in the American League Central standings, trailing the division-leading White Sox by 6.5 games. The Cubs are currently in second place in the National League Central standings and have closed the gap with the leading Brewers, now trailing by just seven games with a record of 56-44. While much of the season remains, with the second half officially under way, both teams will try to move up in the standings and earn a coveted playoff spot.

The teams kicked off their series on Monday night and the Tigers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. The Cubs battled back in the third, bringing the game within one. By the end of the eighth, the game was all square at six runs apiece, as it headed for extra innings. Detroit mustered three runs in the top of the 10th to take a three-run lead. While Chicago tacked on one more, the team came up just short.
Kenley Jansen was credited with the win for Detroit to improve to 2-4 on the season, while Trent Thornton took the loss for Chicago, dropping to 3-3. Riley Greene hit his 15th home run of the season for the Tigers, followed by Dillon Dingler with his 20th of the year. Dingler added another to his tally in the top of the tenth. Chicago saw some big at-bats, as well, with Seiya Suzuki, Michael Busch and Ian Happ all clearing the outfield wall.
Detroit will put the ball in Framber Valdez’ hand on Tuesday night, while the Cubs will counter with David Peterson. Valdez brings a record of 5-6 and an ERA of 4.10, while Peterson is currently sitting at 4-7 with an ERA of 6.45.
