Pittsburgh lost the rubber game of a three-game series at home to the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-0 on Wednesday. Jared Jones turned in a quality start, allowing three runs on four hits in six innings, but the offense never got going, limited to five singles and batting just twice with runners in scoring position, going 0-for-2. Jay Triolo had two hits for the Pirates in the loss.

An error by shortstop Elly De La Cruz opened what turned into a four-run fifth inning on Wednesday as the Reds fell to the visiting Cleveland Guardians 6-1. Brady Singer issued a pair of bases-loaded walks in the inning and allowed four runs, all unearned, on six hits and four walks in 4.1 innings. Cincinnati’s lone run scored in the sixth when Noelvi Marté singled home Dane Myers.

Right-hander Rhett Lowder (3-7) starts the series opener for Cincinnati, entering with a 5.61 ERA and 1.571 WHIP in 77 innings over 18 appearances, 15 of them starts. Right-hander Yohan Ramírez (6-3) is slated to work as the opener for the Pirates, making his first big-league start after 208 relief appearances. Ramírez comes in with a 3.21 ERA and 1.375 WHIP in 56 innings, striking out 62, with Hunter Barco expected to be recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis to serve as the bulk reliever.
