The San Diego Padres go for the series win on Saturday afternoon and hand the Miami Marlins their 11th loss in a row. To say the Marlins have been struggling out of the All-Star break would be an understatement. Miami was swept by the Cleveland Guardians to end the first half of the season, right after they had won six straight and were 10 games over .500 and fighting back in the NL East standings. Then Miami was swept by the Milwaukee Brewers and Houston Astros before starting this series against the Padres. But now Miami has fallen to .500, losing 10 straight with a 52-52 record, but they are 31-21 at home. The Padres avoided losing four of their last five with the 4-2 victory on Friday in the opener. San Diego is looking to make it back to .500, sitting at 51-53 with a 24-29 record on the road. This is the first series of the season between the Padres and Marlins. They will play again toward the end of September in San Diego. Miami will still be the -142 favorite to end this double-digit losing streak. They will try to do that by starting Eury Perez. The righty is 5-7 but has a good 3.53 ERA in 91.2 innings. The Padres will go for the series win by starting JP Sears, who is 2-3 with a 4.38 ERA in 24.2 innings.

Things got off to a good start for the Marlins with a solo shot in the second by Joe Mack, but San Diego had retaken the lead by the fifth inning. Miami had another solo shot in the bottom of the fifth from Heriberto Hernandez. But pinch-hitter Luis Rengifo broke up that tie with a two-run shot in the top of the eighth, putting the Padres ahead that the Marlins could never recover from. San Diego won the game, despite only having five hits on the night. Both of these teams are now fighting for an NL Wild Card spot. Miami is the closest, sitting three games back of the third and final spot, currently held by the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Padres are four games back of their NL West rivals.
