Host Canada opens Group A play on Monday night at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Edmonton when it faces off with Switzerland
One of the prominent showcases for NHL prospects opens on Monday when the puck drops at the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Edmonton. Host Canada plays its opening game with a late-afternoon start against Switzerland in a Group A matchup at Rogers Place. Canada has a record 25 titles in the event which launched in 1991 and took third place in last year’s tournament in Czechia and Slovakia and brings in a loaded roster led by defenseman Landon DuPont, a candidate to go No. 1 overall in 2027. Switzerland, which has never medaled in the tournament, is led by Jonah Neuwenschwander, who has already played in two World Junior Championships.

Canada played two pre-tournament games, beating Sweden 3-1 on Thursday before falling to Czechia 6-0 on Saturday. Chase Surkan scored 5:35 into the third period to give Canada the lead in its win over Sweden, with Liam Pue and Ryerson Edgar also lighting the lamp. Goalie Leif Oaten made 21 saves in his two periods of work in the loss to Czechia.
Switzerland dropped its pre-tournament matchup to Germany 4-1 on Saturday. Sebastian Weber tied the game with a goal late in the first period before the Germans took the lead early in the third period before adding two empty-net markers. Leon Grieder drew an assist for the Swiss and goalies Luca Blaser and Ayden Huet combined for 19 saves.
The tournament was renamed the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in 2018, honoring Czech legend Ivan Hlinka and all-time NHL scoring leader Wayne Gretzky.
