The Rockies are coming off a sweep of the Kansas City Royals at home over the weekend. It was their first sweep of the second half of the season. Colorado is 45-67 overall, but is trying to get back to .500 at home in this series with a 27-29 record. The Rockies will have their hands full, though, in this series, with the Rays leading the AL East standings with a 65-46 record. The Rays hold a 2.5-game lead in the division over the New York Yankees. The Rays made a big move for right-hander Freddy Peralta from the struggling New York Mets to bolster their playoff chances in exchange for three minor leaguers. This Tampa rotation is now shaping up to be one of the best in the American League, led by Drew Rasmussen and Shane McClanahan.
The Rays are trying to bounce back from a 9-1 loss in the rubber match to lose their series on Sunday against the Chicago White Sox. Anthony Kay was just too dominant on the mound for the White Sox, going 6.1 scoreless innings, while Andrew Benintendi, Everson Pereira and Miguel Vargas all hit homers. Tampa’s starter Griffin Jax didn’t pitch poorly at all, only giving up one earned run on four hits with eight strikeouts in five innings, but he was still saddled with the loss. Tampa Bay actually outhit Chicago 11-9, but the Rays left 10 runners on base. The Rays’ lone run came in the ninth inning on a solo shot from Ben Williamson. Tampa Bay will try to get back in the driver’s seat by starting Ian Seymour. The lefty is 7-3 with a 4.37 ERA in 78.1 innings.
Kyle Freeland wasn’t the only one on fire, with the temperature reaching more than 100 degrees in the Mile High City on Sunday. Freeland pitched a complete game in Denver of all places to earn his third win of the season. The longtime Colorado native starter only gave up five hits and one run while striking out eight. It was Freeland’s first career complete game and it completed the sweep of Kansas City. Jake McCarthy hit a three-run homer as part of a six-run sixth inning to give Freeland all the run support he would need. The Rockies will start Michael Lorenzen, who is 3-9 with a 6.54 ERA in 104.2 innings.
