Two All-Stars get the start when the Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays begin an American League East series on Monday night.
There’s an All-Star pitching matchup on Monday night’s Major League Baseball slate, and it comes in a divisional matchup. Up at the Rogers Centre, American League East foes meet with the first-place Tampa Bay Rays (56-42) visiting the Toronto Blue Jays (46-53). Each team will have an All-Star starter starting the opener of the series. Righty Nick Martinez gets the ball for the Rays, while righty Dylan Cease is throwing for the Blue Jays. It’s the first start of the second half of the season for both pitchers.

Martinez will be tasked with being the ‘stopper’ for the Rays, after they got swept by the red-hot Boston Red Sox over the weekend. The Rays have won five of Martinez’s last six starts, with Martinez himself going 3-0 in that stretch. On the season, he’s 8-2 in 18 starts with a 2.65 ERA.
Back in early May, Martinez made a start against the Blue Jays. He won that one, allowing one run in five innings as the Rays won 5-1.
Meanwhile, Cease is making his first start since starting the All-Star Game, in which he struck out three hitters to open the game. He’s 6-4 with a 2.56 ERA in 17 starts this year, including throwing seven innings of one-run ball against the Rays in a later May series. His 148 strikeouts on the year rank second in all of baseball and lead the American League.
These teams have already played two series against each other this season. The Rays have won five of the six games, although Toronto took the most recent matchup in mid-May, with a 5-3 win in extra innings.
