The Arizona Diamondbacks (54-49), with three straight wins and nine victories in their last 11 games, moved into the third wild-card spot in the National League on Thursday night and open a three-game series with the Washington Nationals (52-51) at Nationals Park in Washington on Friday night. Arizona opened a 10-game road trip in St. Louis for a makeup game on Thursday before heading to D.C. The Nationals come home from a 4-2 Western road trip as they fight for their first postseason bid since winning the World Series in 2019.

Tyler Locklear finished 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI and Brandon Pfaadt worked six strong innings on Thursday as the Diamondbacks held off a late charge for a 10-6 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Pfaat allowed two runs over six innings, scattering seven hits. Gabriel Moreno and Nolan Arenado drove in two runs apiece in the wins, with Arizona breaking the game open with a five-run eighth inning.
Washington closed out its road trip on Wednesday with an 8-0 win over the Colorado Rockies. Cade Cavalli struck out eight in six scoreless innings, teaming with two relievers for a six-hit shutout at Coors Field, and Luis García Jr. belted a two-run home run as part of a six-run seventh inning that broke open a close game. CJ Abrams went 4-for-5 in the win as well.
The Nationals scratched scheduled starter Zack Littell and instead will give the ball to left-hander Carson Palmquist (0-1), who enters with an 8.74 ERA and 1.676 WHIP in seven appearances, including four starts, covering 11.1 innings, striking out 14. Arizona also goes with a lefty as All-Star Eduardo Rodríguez (8-3) gets the call. He comes in with a 2.62 ERA and 1.217 WHIP in 20 starts and 116.2 innings.
